Readings for Monday

Please have a look at the Shreeves' article on OAI and the Berners-Lee article on the semantic web for Monday.

I am also including links to other resources to supplement your reading, should you be interested in more.

A good weekend to all ...

Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Metadata Harvesting Project
http://oai.grainger.uiuc.edu/index.htm
This takes you to the homepage of the OAI. The link to presentations and papers in particular will take you to a wealth of resources about the OAI: http://oai.grainger.uiuc.edu/presentations.htm.

For class on Monday, please be sure to look at the 2004 Shreeves et al. article:
Experiences of educators using a portal of aggregated metadata. Journal of Digital Information 5(3). Article No. 290, 2004-09-09.

OAI for Beginners - the Open Archives Forum online tutorial
http://www.oaforum.org/tutorial/
This tutorial is an introduction to the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and is highly recommended.

The Semantic Web: A new form of Web content that is meaningful to computers will unleash a revolution of new possibilities By Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler and Ora Lassila (May 2001) in Scientific American magazine.
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=00048144-10D2-1C70-84A9809EC588EF21
This is the classic article by Berners-Lee and others, provides a very good starting place in learning about the semantic web. Please read for class on Monday.

The W3C Semantic Web Activity page
http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/
Provides links to specifications (RDF and OWL), Publications/Articles/Interviews (including a 15 minute video with Berners-Lee), Upcoming Presentations, and Groups. This is an excellent resource for keeping current with semantic web activities. Please review.
